A message from our Chapter President
Welcome!
As Chapter President, I, Dr. Cheryl Scott, welcome you to the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., Gamma Tau Chapter website. Gamma Tau Chapter is part of a national organization whose goal is to empower African American women to aspire to attain professional and business careers and inspire African American youth to reach their academic goals as well as encourage them to engage in civic and social service activities.
Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. has enjoyed a rich and extensive history of leadership and community service. We began in 1929 with our founder, Lola Mercedes Parker and six other women who shared her vision to support women and youth in the African American community. We now have more than 50 chapters with membership numbering more than 1,000 in cities throughout the US including the District of Columbia, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Gamma Tau Chapter located in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul was founded in 1967 by Bernyce Welling and a group of women who believed in the same ideals as our Founder, Lola M. Parker.
The members of Gamma Tau Chapter are very active in the business of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc. We promote the National Iota Programs including “Toys U Can’t Return”, “Iota Mothers Assistance Program”, Career Exploration and Tutoring. In addition, we engage in activities to honor our heritage, educators and entrepreneurship, as well as, communicate with our Sisters and friends locally and nationwide. To this end we celebrate National Education Week, Correspondence Month, Black History Month, and Business Month. Further, we support national organizations such as the National Urban League (NUL), the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW), the Lola Mercedes Parker Foundation for Economic Empowerment of Business and Professional Women (LMPF), and the Black Women’s Agenda (BWA) to mention a few.
Please browse our website to learn more about the history and programs of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., and the members of Gamma Tau Chapter. Consider joining us in our endeavor, as women, to make a difference in the lives and livelihood of African Americans!
